CULTURE CHANGE IN LONG-TERM CARE
The current health crisis has taken a terrible toll in Quebec’s long-term care homes with thousands of Canada’s elders dying alone, neglected, and isolated from their families. Not surprisingly, the elder care crisis started long before the coronavirus pandemic. According to research, some of the biggest obstacles to quality care are inappropriate staffing levels, lack of training and the perception of elder care as unskilled work. This pandemic has provided an opportunity to think about how long-term care homes can be transformed from restrictive institutions into vibrant caring communities, full of dignity and respect, where older adults can flourish and prosper, not just survive.
